"Ukulele Rangers" iPad & iPhone Wallpapers

“Ukulele Rangers” was our nickname for the folks we encountered in Yosemite who’d brought their ukuleles (or guitars or even one fella with an udu) along on their hikes. I’d done this quick sketch at the time, but in the two months since our trip I’ve kept returning to this idea — a bit obsessively, actually — of these chance meetings and impromptu jam sessions among companionable folks, making music while enjoying the outdoors.

Well, I’ve fleshed-out and refined these sketches a bit and here’s the results (plus some t-shirts, mugs ‘n such on Zazzle).

Who are the Ukulele Rangers? Well, you are. If you’ve ever taken your uke to the park, or camping — or you’ve just sat under the trusty bug zapper on your back porch — you’ve joined the proud tradition of outdoors musicians!

So as an official Ukulele Ranger in good standing, why not download these and spread the word, that ukes belong among such camping essentials as s’mores and trail mix, or stinky bug spray and knee-high socks. Oh, and sunblock, of course. Gotta have that.

PS. Today, July 10, is Zazzle’s 7th birthday and they’re celebrating by offering 25% off all shirts. Use Code: ZSBDAYSHIRTS

Custom Derek Yaniger Tiki/Hipster Ukuleles

Derek is a whirlwind of productivity whose loose, free-flowing lines hearken a nostalgia-tinged classic tiki life are a natural continuation of Jim Flora’s 50’s hipsters. He’s designed some fantastic tiki mugs … and adorned a few musical instruments, too, including these ukuleles and bongos.

My own “My Dog Has Fleas” sketch.
In case you don’t already know “my dog has fleas" refers to an old song whose first four notes match the uke’s four strings when using the standard C-tuning (strings are GCEA — "good cooks eat alot”).
This flea-thing works out exceptionally well, too, because ukulele’s literal Hawaiian meaning is “jumping flea”, which isn’t so odd as their state fish’s name means “fish with a nose like a pig” — the famed humuhumunukunukuapua’a. Big on the similes, those Hawaiians.
This design’s available on CafePress as a sticker, magnet, button, and the ever popular coffee mug (though I actually just made this for myself — need a new office mug and wasn’t happy with uke designs I found, so made my own).
OK, quick update: CafePress’s changed some policies ‘n such (don’t ask lest I rant) so I’m shilling three mug designs on Printfection (I wanted a set, which is unnecessarily complicated to do on CP). I’ve ordered a couple mugs which have yet to arrive, when they do I’ll report back as to the quality.

I rather fancy the Uke Practice Mug (pictured, far right) if I say so myself.
Thanks to Tony Soh on VectoryDiary for his tutorial on simulating wood grain with Illustrator. Thanks also PSDGraphics for the Coffee Mug used in the comp above. The font is Desigers Bold.

Incredibly beginner-friendly ukulele chords on UkuleleHunt.com (I much prefer this acoustic version, above, to the full band arrangement)
