Jack Johnson’s “Banana Pancakes” Two weeks ago I got summarily pwned by an 8-year-old. I was at a cousin’s first birthday bash when I was mistaken for a ukulele player, possibly because I was playing my uke. Regardless, I was introduced to a boy who’d just taken up the uke — let’s call him “the punk” — to, you know, dispatch sage uke wisdom and technique blah blah blah. So The Punk listened politely for a minute before taking my uke and nailing this Jack Johnson ditty. He’d learned it about an hour before. From YouTube. While his parents were getting ready for the party. So, here’s the tutorial video he’d instantly absorbed. It is, not coincidentally, also by an eight year old kid. After dutifully watching, re-watching and a considerable bit of head scratching I decoded and made it through (my notes above, “X’s” indicate chuck/chunk/scratch). I’ve never done slides on the uke before — this is a blast! The rest of the song is G, D7, Am, C7 repeated.
